Gebremedhn Weldemariam: Tour Guide

Gebremedhn (Gebre) is a native of Tigray, Ethiopia, based in Makelle, and has worked as a tour guide for the rock-hewn churches of Tigray since 2012 when he helped to found the local guide association for the churches. He has served as a supervisor for the organization for four years. Over his time with the association he has worked with hundreds of visitors, in large tour groups or individually,  to show and teach them about the incredible history and culture of the churches, Ethiopian Orthodoxy, and the country of Ethiopia.

Gebremedhn has also guided guests in other parts of Ethiopia such as Axum, Gondar, Lalibella, the Simein Mountains, Harar, and Addis Ababa. He is passionate about showing the beauty, history and culture of his country to everyone and strives to ensure his guests enjoy their Ethiopia experience.

When not working Gebre spends his spare time helping his parents on their farm, manually plowing the land with two oxen, planting the seeds, harvesting the plants, and threshing. He enjoys drinking coffee, watching football, and playing with his many nieces and nephews.
